Mahabad hosts third annual Kurdish dance festival celebrating culture and unity

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The city of Mahabad in western Iran welcomed large crowds this week for its third annual Kurdish dance festival, where ten dance troupes showcased traditional performances honoring Kurdish culture, heritage, and artistic expression.

Festival brings together performers and enthusiastic audiences

The event drew praise from participants and spectators alike. Singer Mani Bruska said the gathering created a lively and joyful atmosphere. “This vibrant event, with the participation of these groups, promotes unity among Kurds and reflects the depth of our culture and art,” he said.

The festival centers on halparke, the iconic Kurdish folk dance performed hand-in-hand by mixed groups of men and women — a practice often discouraged by Iranian authorities.

Public performances and cultural exhibitions

The first day opened with a halparke carnival held on Tawheed Bridge, followed by an art exhibition at Wahdat Hall featuring portraits inspired by the traditional dance. Throughout the two-day festival, performances continue across Mahabad’s bazaars, parks, and public spaces, drawing large and supportive crowds.

Festival-goers highlight cultural resilience

Attendees emphasized the importance of culture in preserving Kurdish identity. “Our language, culture, and artistic traditions have carried us through centuries of hardship. After all these years, we remain alive and thriving,” said festival-goer Mardin Khalili.

On Friday evening, a judging committee at Wahdat Hall is set to select the festival’s standout dancers.

Mahabad’s historic role in Kurdish nationalism

Mahabad holds a central place in Kurdish history as the birthplace of the short-lived Republic of Mahabad, established by Qazi Muhammad in 1946. The city continues to symbolize Kurdish resistance and the enduring struggle for cultural rights, self-determination, and national identity.
