Western Kurdistan / Nechirvan Barzani and Mazloum Abdi Emphasize Kurdish Unity

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Wednesday received Mazloum Abdi, commander-in-chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), in a meeting focused on strengthening Kurdish unity in Syria and advancing political dialogue to safeguard Kurdish rights.
According to an official statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency, the discussions addressed the Kurdish issue in Syria, the situation of other communities, and ongoing talks between the SDF and the Syrian government in Damascus. The two sides also exchanged views on regional security concerns, including the continued threat of terrorism and the potential resurgence of ISIS.
President Barzani stressed the importance of cohesion among Kurdish political forces in Syria, emphasizing that differences should be resolved through dialogue, understanding, and peaceful engagement. He underlined that Kurdish unity is essential for protecting the rights and interests of the Kurdish people within the changing political landscape in Syria.
He also reiterated his long-standing call for Syrian Kurds to engage directly with the authorities in Damascus in order to pursue sustainable political solutions through diplomatic channels.
Mazloum Abdi arrived in Duhok on Tuesday to attend the Middle East Peace and Security (MEPS) forum, where he delivered a speech highlighting the Kurdistan Region’s role in encouraging peaceful dialogue among Syrian Kurds and facilitating communication with Damascus.
During his remarks and the subsequent meeting with President Barzani, Abdi expressed appreciation for the Kurdistan Region’s support, praising the president’s efforts in backing Kurdish rights and promoting constructive political engagement in Syria.
Speaking at a MEPS panel, President Barzani acknowledged the role of Mazloum Abdi and the SDF in confronting terrorism and contributing to stability in Syria. He noted that the forces under Abdi’s leadership have played a significant role in countering extremist groups and supporting peace and security in the region.
The meeting underscored a shared commitment to reinforcing Kurdish unity, strengthening political cooperation, and pursuing peaceful pathways to resolve long-standing challenges affecting Syria and the wider region.
