Fatal lightning strike at provincial schoolyard

A severe weather event at an educational facility in the southern Turkish province of Diyarbarkir (Amed) resulted in the deaths of two adolescents and left a third critically injured on Saturday.

Victims sought shelter during the storm

The youths, who were 14 and 15 years old, had traveled from their home community of Lexeriye to the neighboring settlement of Rihanok, where the school is situated. A family member, Hussein Yeshil, explained the circumstances leading up to the tragedy to local media, stating, "They went under a tree and the lightning struck them." He confirmed the exact location of the casualties, adding, "It happened there."

Weekend closure prevented further loss of life

Because the incident occurred over the weekend, the educational institution was closed and devoid of its usual student population. Another relative, Recep Yeshil, emphasized the potential for a much broader disaster had the building been fully occupied. He remarked that if classes had been in session, "it could have been a horrific catastrophe," continuing by noting, "Perhaps many students would have lost their lives, one cannot know."

Historical data on nationwide weather casualties

Electrical storm discharges have a history of causing substantial casualties throughout Turkey. A 2015 collaborative research initiative conducted by the Technical University in Istanbul and the University of Manchester documented nearly 900 deaths and approximately 150 severe injuries linked to lightning strikes between the years 1930 and 2014. The study's data revealed that roughly 86 percent of these tragedies took place in agricultural and rural districts.
